Modesty: A Woman's Crowning Glory - Her Hair

(This post is NOT for all. It is specific to the SAVED - meaning a female who has had a transformation of heart by the word of God. I pray this message moves you toward the next level in your walk with the Lord. I pray that the Lord will minister to your heart through this post and grant you the gift of total SANCTIFICATION (being set apart unto the Lord) to live a HOLY life to the Lord from within AND without in Jesus' name.)

Majority of people limit 'Modesty' only to a woman's apparel. However, the Bible addresses modesty in a holistic manner. The Bible's description of modesty talks not only of a woman's apparel but of her adornment, as well as the way she styles her hair. In addressing a woman's hair the bible says "whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair (1 Peter 3:3); "...not with broided hair" (1 Timothy 2:9). The Bible is not saying that we should not style our hair; rather the point it is emphasizing is that our hairstyles as women should be simple. No extravagance. We should not seek to draw attention to the kind of hairstyle that we do. We should not follow the latest hairstyles just to fit into this corrupt society. The simpler our hairstyle the more the glory of God will shine through. People will be attracted to our simplistic hairstyle because God's glory is attractive.

"My hair is too hard," "it is too nappy" "it is too difficult to manage" etc are just some of the excuses that many women of the African descent say about their hair. Even though the Bible doesn't give us specific instructions as to how to care for our type or any other type of hair, that reason should not facilitate excuses to result to 'cheap' solutions of relaxing our hair and adding artificial hair to our head. The Bible says "Ah Lord God! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:"-Jeremiah 32:17. If we are confident in the God that we serve and we believe that there is nothing too hard for Him to do in our lives, then it is our responsibility to go back to Him and ask Him for instructions as to HOW to take care of our highly textured hair. Wasn't He the one who gave us our hair? Will He not have answers? Yes, He will.

The problem with any type of artificial hair is that it becomes a great idol in our lives because we can't do away with it. I know of women who have been relaxing and wearing fake hair for so long that they don't even know how their natural hair looks like! It also makes us hypocrites because we don't show ourselves as we were created in the world. We paint an acceptable image that the people of the world will approve of which makes God to be displeased with us; because as His temple, we have chosen to decorate ourselves with the things of the world which darkness He has called us out of. By using weaves and hair extensions we bluntly tell Him that we are not in agreement with the hair He has given us and so we will use the man-made one to show Him how He ought to have made our hair and to gain a more 'appealing' and self-satisfying look. Isn't that selfishness? Have we really been crucified with Christ as Paul writes in Galatians 2:20?

Our fleshly will and desires must be crucified with Christ so that His perfect will may easily flow through us and dictate our lifestyle. Relaxing and applying fake hair makes us to become unsatisfied for what God has given us naturally. We become so blinded and attached to them in so much that it prevents us from actually appreciating the hair that God Himself crafted for us with His beautiful hands! Other than the fact that artificial hair becomes idol in our lives and make us hypocrites keeping us from being fully accepted by God in our service to Him, it also destroys our hair! I have seen sad stories of women scarred with lasting effects of weaves and hair attachment. God is wise. He knew of all these things ahead of time and that is why in His infinite wisdom He gave us all hair so that we will not be attracted to the devil's imitation of His perfect creation. Let us be also wise and be not deceived!

So, do you embrace the natural texture of the hair God gave you, or are you fond of attaching weaves and hair extensions to your head? Are you ashamed of the texture of hair that God gave you? Would you rather straighten it with chemicals or attach fake straight hair because that is more socially acceptable? Who are you serving, God or man? If God approves of you what does it matter if man doesn't? Just so you know, these artificial hairs that some Christian women put on as their hair are possessions and inventions of the devil to draw women to hell. Therefore when you as a Christian use such objects of the devil, you have become a candidate of his kingdom! Be ware. I once again repeat that God is wise. He gave everybody hair, and if He didn't give you hair being bald is His will for your life and you must appreciate that, too. It is a great insult to Him when we destroy the hair He gave us by using chemicals to straighten it and by applying devils hair to His temple. Having trouble with accepting your hair as God gave you?

The Bible says a woman's hair is her glory. When you replace your hair with the hair that you bought from the beauty supply store don't you know that you have allowed the devil to buy your glory and has substituted it with his ugliness and has made you one of his? My dear sister, the glory of God cannot be bought with man's money. It is given to us free of charge. Start over! Get rid of the filth of fake hair and cut off the relaxed hair and start over! God is such a good God. After we have damaged the hair he gave us if we wish He has mercy on us by allowing the hair to grow back; beautiful roots of His glory begins to sprout once again. He gives us another chance to receive the glory once given to us just as He does as he saves a wretched soul that was once damned for hell! He ultimately gives us another chance to life!

Here is the Command: “What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.”-1 Corinthians 6:19,20. There was a price that was paid for your Salvation, and THAT price was the BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST that was shed for the remission of our sins. One man had to shed blood and die so that you and I can be qualified for entering into God’s Kingdom. The price was free but certainly NOT cheap. Because of this, our body is NO LONGER ours. It is God’s. It has now become His TEMPLE and it is an INSULT to Him for anyone to decorate His holy TEMPLE with the idols of the world. Therefore you cannot paint your body various colors. Your natural beauty is perfect and BEAUTIFUL; value yourself as God created you! He is a PERFECT creator and definitely did not make a hint of mistake in creating you!

This afternoon God is calling you to newness of life concerning your hair, my sister. As a child of God what business do you have with artificial hair? "And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people"-2 Corinthians 6:15,16. God desires to dwell fully in you as His temple. Stop blocking His glory from entering into your life by using tools of the enemy. Start over if you must! He is faithful and will not reject you if you run to Him with a meek and contrite heart.

May we be delivered from the devices of the Devil geared toward us women in Jesus' name! Amen.

Be blessed!

  2. I love your conviction and how strong you are with it from reading your blogs, God bless you!

My input on this topic though is to be careful with using do's and don'ts as pertaining to "areas that the Bible did not categorically give commands." - I quoted that right out of our Search the Scriptures that we will be studying this sunday titled 'moderation and christian dressing.' ^_^ In such areas our yardstick as christians is moderation. Another thing is, in areas like this, it is possible, as christians to have different CONVICTIONS as every one's personal walk with Christ is also, different. For example, my mother has a strong conviction against braiding her hair, but not against relaxers. Some sisters in the church carry the exact opposite conviction, it doesn't make them any less saved or sanctified based off that alone.

I think it is important to remember Ecclesiastes 7:16 "Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise..." to where you start pushing you convictions to other people, and not God's commands. My study Bible explains that verse like this "some people...become so rigid in their own views that they lose sensitivity to the true reason for being good--to honor God." No where in the Bible does it say that weaves do not honor God but using the context of your supporting scriptures I can clearly see where u got your conviction from and I respect it. But remember than not all (truly saved and sanctified believers) will agree. I added "saved and sanctified" in there because others who have not come to Christ may just hold these beliefs to justify their flesh alone. Anyways, Paul says, (Romans 14:1) that we are not to quarrel about issues that are matters of opinion. Zoom into verse 5, "let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind."

Also from my study Bible, "Differences should not be feared or avoided but accepted and handled with love. We cannot expect everyone, even the best possible church to agree on every subject. Through sharing ideas we can come to a fuller understanding of what the Bible teaches. We should accept, listen and respect others. Differences of opinion need not to cause division. In addition, while the church must be uncompromising in its stand against activities that are expressly forbidden by Scripture (adultery, homosexuality, murder, theft) it should not create additional rules & regulations.. and give them EQUAL standing with what God wants us to do"

P.S. The search the scripture mentions that "curling or blowing up hair is clearly indicative of a depraved heart", I also noticed that you have shared some techniques on how u add curls to ur natural hair. Further showing that these things are based on ones conviction. I am not in disagreement with any of ur convictions & though i dont hold all the same ones, Im reminded of James 4:17. If you have ben convicted in a certain area and choose to disobey, it then becomes a sin, TO YOU.

    Peace & Blessings; Awesome Blog!
    =)

    1. Hey,
thank you so much for stopping by! I appreciate your input and your backing scriptures - really, I do. Praise God that the blog has served as an inspiration to you in one way or another. This is an interesting post. It seems to have gotten quite a bit of 'attention'; but the Lord is at hand. As you've mention, yes, conviction is highly important in our Christian walk. I completely agree. I base my posts and live my life according to the convictions I receive as I walk closer with my Lord, and are desirous to be more like Him from within and without; believe me when I say that I still ask the Lord to teach me how to live my life and style my hair in a manner that is acceptable to Him - I am NOT perfect and don't claim to be so. He's still working on me.

You are right the Bible does not command us to not wear weave, etc but I am truly convinced that false hair is the devil's imitation of God's perfect creation and in order to save my fellow Christian sisters from the 'other side' of Eternity I must let them know via this blog. This post is to serve as a warning to the Christian woman who desires to make heaven and is ignorant of the devices of the devil by being deceived of wearing false hair. Besides that, I have a serious issue with the reasoning behind women wearing fake hair. Is it that our hair not good enough? Where did our desire to wear weave come from? What is our motivation? Just out of curiosity, I need to perhaps do some research as to WHY women are so fond of wearing artificial hair when God has already given us our own. Why can't we be satisfied with what He has given us? Again, we are all on different levels in our walk with God. In my walk with the Lord, I have come to understand that the closer a person gets to God by reading His Word daily, praying, and yielding themselves to Him completely that His Will be done in their lives, the more He multiplies His grace upon us to live a life that is completely in perfect alignment with His will within and without by convicting us to let go of plenty of things that though being Christians we thought were 'okay' to do/use.

By the grace of God, I have testimonies personally, and of people whom God himself convicted of throwing away their artificial hair, make-up, jewelries, trousers etc after they became truly born again - signifying that such are not in the will of God for those professing to be Christians. God is not the author of confusion. He will not convict an individual to throw away their artificial hair, make-up, jewelries, trousers etc and approve it for another. It's all about how intimate we are with Him and how compliant we are to His leading. He works patiently with us and gradually moves us to the next level of Grace as we cling faithfully to Him. If we walk closer with Him and are obedient to His voice, He will really polish us after an image that is righteous and holy and one that is acceptable in His sight.

May the Lord mold us into being more like Jesus. I pray that we will go higher and higher everyday in the knowledge, wisdom, understanding, and conviction of the holy spirit in Jesus name. 1. Hello sister Nkiru!

I am so very happy to hear from you and thank you for visiting the blog as well. Wow, praise God for what He has done for you - convicting you to throw away your "earthly desires." I am so glad to hear that! I do have to mention that you won't look "dirty" if you didn't relax your hair. Remember that it was God who created it and in Genesis 1:31 the Bible says and God saw everything that He had made, and, behold it was very good"; your hair falls into that category of being "very good" because it was created by God.

I would discourage relaxing your hair because relaxing it shows a depreciation of what God has given you. His will is for us to appreciate our natural-ness void of alteration. He is a perfect God and we are definitely created perfectly without mistake. There are many methods for caring for our type and a wealth of information out there specific to your type of hair. There are also many styles out there that you can do to make your hair appear "neat."

Please, don't be discouraged about your hair type. Ask God to help you to love the hair he has given you; allow it to grow and if you need help with caring for it by God's grace I will be here to help! Let us not find cheap solutions to 'hide' what God has given us; rather let us accept the perfect creation of His hands. Please check out this post:http://modestic-elegance.blogspot.com/2011/09/curly-hair-is-awesome.html. I pray it serves as an encouragement to you!

      God bless you,

  7. But the Bible specifically says that "long hair" is a woman's glory. Many black women cannot grow long hair. So where is their glory? I have always wondered why God didn't make us with long hair readily (I know that some black women can and have grown their hair long). But this is not the case for many black women. This is just really hard for me to wrap my head around. I do love the Lord, and this is a sincere question.

  8. Hello there,

Thank you for your question, and for visiting the blog. It isn't that God didn't make us readily with long hair, in fact he has given us the capacity to have long hair but women (especially African or curly haired women) stress their hair too much - they add perms, extensions, colors, etc not knowing that all of those practices hinders their hair from attaining the desired long length and keeps intact their 'glory'!

For African women to attain longer hair is to adapt techniques and method of care that will produce the desired long hair as can be found on this blog. If women who have curlier textured hair would banish the perming and attachments and 'listen' to their hair and provide it with its 'nutrients,' along with prayer, I trust God there will be a great turn around in their hair length! The secret is in simplicity.

Hope your question has been answered?

  9. I have had natural hair long before it became popular and their was a natural hair movement. I have not permed my hair for near 20 years.

If I hold a piece of it and pull it, it is below my collar bone, but in it's natural state, it has only ever looked and probably will only be roughly around chin length.

I doubt it will ever appear longer. I was so tempted to install tiny locks but I am not sure about that spiritually.

Yes, black hair grows, but for some of us, it is hardly visible.
