Happy Tuesday VYB!
As mentioned, we are continuing with our Bible Study of the prominent women leaders in the Bible. Last time, we discussed Deborah and today, we are privileged to learn about Phebe.
In Romans 16:1 Apostle Paul says “I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea.” Paul introduces a phenomenal young woman. Phebe was a young woman committed to the Lord as Paul described her as “our sister.” She was committed to the service of the body of Christ; she was a “succorer of many and of myself also” as Paul recalls. She was hospitable.
A pure relationship exhibited between Phebe and Paul. She was submissive, teachable, a true Christian not only in name but in character. She was faithful, trustworthy, dependable, full of good works, her faith was visible and practical. She was a trusted leader in the church. There are only two verses about her in scriptures but those two verses showcase so powerfully how a beautiful woman she was inside and out. Phebe certainly lived a radiant and pure life according to the meaning of her name. May we be a Phebe in our generation in Jesus’ name.
FUN FACT: Our baby’s middle name is Phebe!
REFLECTION: As an Christian leader Phebe was a…
Sister: believer, child of God
Servant: a leader in the church. Recognized as one given to the work of the Lord
Succorer: gave her time, talent and resources to be a blessing to the body of Christ
Shining spinster: served the Lord with her singlehood, remained sexually pure and holy
Which aspects of Phebe’s life inspires you? As a single lady, her life was radiant and exemplary. Phebe was not involved in chasing after men for validation and sexual pleasure. Phebe was a satisfied single and her goal was to live for and serve her God the husband of her soul.
As a single of married lady, are you promiscuous? Are you involved in sexual relationships with men to whom you are not married? Are you committed to God and His work? Do you demonstrate hospitality to others especially those of the household of faith? Have you discovered and are in the business of utilizing your God-given talents and gifts for the edification of the church?
You too can live a radiant life whether single or married if only you refrain from every sin-stained lifestyle, desire and ask for a pure life from the author of radiance - God himself and He is faithful to grant your heart’s desire.
Let’s have a discussion! Feel free to share your thoughts with us.
(You may type up your response or send an audio message). Please share your experiences to encourage a sister!
I look forward to reading/listening to your responses.
With love,
-Mrs. Charity Umar
