We are continuing with our “Temple Building” Series. In previous weeks, we have addressed our spiritual, mental and emotional health. This week, we are discussing the topic “Physical Health: diet and exercise. This will conclude our “Temple Building” Series.
DIET:
Diet and exercise are two important components of life. Our diet helps to nourish our bodies with nutrients and vitamins while exercise helps to sustain us. Fresh fruits and vegetables are great sources of nutrients for the body’s health and proper functioning.
“A balanced diet should consist of the following: Protein: fish, chicken, red meat, dairy products, eggs, nuts and beans. Healthy fats: soft or liquid margarine, avocados, ground flaxseed, nuts and oils. Carbohydrates: fruits, starchy vegetables, whole grains, beans and legumes.” (Www.goshenhealth.com)
Temple building requires good material for its stability. If our bodies will be quality edifices we need to consume foods that God has made available in the earth to meet the need of our nourishment and proper health. ‘USDA's Dietary Guidelines recommend adults eat anywhere from 5 to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables per day’ (www.mayoclinic.org).
Drinking water has many benefits. Water has spiritual as well as physical benefits. Jesus is the water of life (John 4:14). He quenches the thirst of the soul, so does water to the physical body. Water also purifies the body from the inside out by flushing out toxins that harms the body’s systems.
Water intake recommendation: About 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids a day for men. About 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women (www.mayoclinics.org)
EXERCISE:
“For bodily exercise profiteth little…” -1 Timothy 4:8. One thing I’ve learned from this passage is that although bodily exercise profits little, it still profits. So let’s engage in exercise! Engaging in regular exercise helps to prevent diseases such as stroke, hypertension, diabetes type 2, and heart disease.
Examples of moderate-intensity aerobic activities: (www.heart.org)
- brisk walking (at least 2.5 miles per hour)
- water aerobics
- dancing (in purity)
- gardening
- tennis (doubles)
- biking slower than 10 miles per hour
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
When we do our part in keeping our bodies healthy and wholesome with God’s provision in the earth it honors God and brings glory to His name.
